The Role: POLICY OFFICER

An exciting post is available within our Policy Unit which operates at the heart of Waltham Forest Council. As Policy Officer you will play a key role the development and delivery of the Council’s ambitions, working closely with the Cabinet, Council Leader, Chief Executive and other senior officers. You will provide high quality policy and public affairs advice and develop new and exciting approaches to support the Council to meet the needs of our existing and future residents. The Policy Unit is currently focussed on delivering a Climate Change commission. A program of Commission meetings is already well underway with a further 3 planned in the new year. The Policy officer plays a key role in the preparation of papers for the commission, liaising with officers across the Council and producing high quality evidence papers. You will be expected to assist in other Policy Unit activities including producing briefings at short notice, as well as lead the development and delivery of longer-term research projects. High-quality, and evidence-based approaches will underpin your work. You will be expected to build relationships beyond the council, working with other public-, private- and third-sector bodies to develop policy and advocate on our behalf. It will be a highly visible role, both within and beyond Waltham Forest. The Person The successful applicant will have a positive, can-do attitude and approach. You will have excellent written and oral communication skills, and the ability to work creatively and positively to find solutions to problems. You will be resilient, highly motivated and able to work with agility in a pressurised political environment. You will be confident, open and outgoing in order to build lasting relationships across the Council and with external bodies. Ideally, you will have experience of working in policy development, research and/or public affairs and of providing advice to politicians or senior leaders.

Research, analysis, interpretation and evaluation experience, as well as of writing reports and briefings to a high standard is also an advantage. If you are a committed team member, with drive and enthusiasm we would love to hear from you.
