About the Role:
Surrey County Council is the Highway Authority for the County of Surrey and is responsible for the maintenance of a wide range of highway infrastructure that includes a wide variety of structures such as heritage and modern bridges including River Thames crossings at Hampton Court, Walton, Chertsey and Staines, and vehicle restraint systems.To help manage this key area of work, we are looking for an enthusiastic, experienced and forward thinking Engineer to join our Highway Infrastructure Engineering team responsible for delivering the highway structures, and vehicle restraint systems.

The successful candidate will be responsible for project managing highways structures and vehicle restraint systems from the point of commissioning through to completion- feasibility, developing designs, costing, procurement, ordering, site inspections, and budget management. The role is an ideal opportunity for a self-motivated Engineer with all-round project management experience to be innovative and find new ways of working to make an important contribution to delivery of the annual programmes.
Our forward programme includes a variety of interesting schemes and the successful candidate will have an opportunity to get involved with a range of works including bridge strengthening, bridge replacement, retaining walls, culverts and safety barrier schemes.
The successful candidate will also have the opportunity to get involved with our programme of structures inspections and developing a programme of maintenance and assessment.

The ideal candidate will be someone who has a proven track record of delivery, with excellent communication and negotiation skills, to work closely with a range of stakeholders, design consultants, external authorities, EA, contractors, Districts and Borough Councils, landowners and utilities on a day-to-day basis to effectively deliver the annual programme of works whilst providing Best Value. Previous experience of working for Local Government will be beneficial.

The role will include a mix of office and site work and a driving licence and car are essential.

Qualification in Civil/Structural Engineering, or related subject and evidence of relevant experience.

Working knowledge of civil, highway and or structural engineering projects in a client role including, design, specification, contract documentation, programming and budget management.

Knowledge of the range and relevant principles, standards, practices and procedures relating to Civil and Highway Structures.

Successful track record of project delivery on time, quality and budget.

Working knowledge of inspections, emergency, routine and minor planned maintenance of highway structures and road restraint systems.
Knowledge of CDM and health and safety requirements related to Highway Structures
